THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO
March 16, 2005 - Vol 8, No 11
The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide.
by Benjamin F. Elliott
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho
Doctor Who premieres in 10 days (26 March) on BBC One http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone at 7PM, 20 days (5 April) on the CBC http://www.cbc.ca/television at 8PM (8:30PM Newfoundland), and at an undetermined point on Prime TV New Zealand http://www.primetv.co.nz . Episode 5's title has changed and episode 6 now has a title - see the listings. Trailers on the CBC and BBC have been wetting audiences' appetites. The BBC trailers have been showing up on their Doctor Who website http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho . Since last week's column, more special programming in the UK has been announced to tie in to the new series:
BBC Two http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctwo - in addition to The Culture Show on 17 March and the Doctor Who programming on 19 March, the 18 March edition of Newsnight Review (11PM) will feature a review of the new series. BBC2W Wales (digital only) will have an interview with Russell T. Davies on "On Show", an arts show airing 17 March at 9PM.
BBC One http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone - Blue Peter will have a Doctor
Who special on 21 March at 4:55PM (repeated at 6PM on the CBBC
Channel). The Doctor Who Confidential team are doing an additional
30 minute documentary - "Doctor Who - A New Dimension", scheduled to
air at 5:25PM on 26 March, just 95 minutes before the series
premiere. The Wales variation of BBC One will air the "On Show"
interview with Russell T. Davies on 20 March at 11:15PM.
Channel 4 http://www.channel4.com - the 2nd Peter Cushing Dr. Who movie - Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150A.D. - will air on 25 March at 12:40PM. IF YOU'RE IN WALES, S4C http://www.s4c.co.uk/e-index.html will air the movie on 26 March at 12:15PM instead.
UKTV Gold http://www.ukgold.tv - Instead of pre-empting Doctor Who on 26 March as previously scheduled, they will have a Doctor Who Day from 8AM to 7PM that looks remarkably like part of their Doctor Who @ 40 weekend from 2003. Doctor Who will still be pre-empted on their channel on 27 March for a Carry On movie marathon.
BBC Radio Wales http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/radiowales/ will have a 3
part Doctor Who special starting 26 March. Time TBA.
TV3 http://www.tv3.ie/welcome.htm in Ireland will air the Parkinson episode with Billie Piper on 24 March at 10PM and 25 March at 2:35PM, which should raise awareness of the new series in Ireland. Parkinson also airs on M-Net in South Africa, UKTV Australia, and some other networks - but I don't know the lag time from UK to overseas airings.
The BBC's Doctor Who website http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho will be
ramping up its online content as the series airs, including all 13
episodes of Doctor Who Confidential.
BBC Prime http://www.bbcprime.com stated last year in their FAQ that they were not planning to buy Doctor Who. They have re-iterated this, clarifying that they both have no plans to buy the new series starting in the UK nor do they intend to repeat the old series in the foreseeable future. While not stated on the site, I suspect that the BBC wants to sell the new series to as many local broadcasters in the BBC Prime footprint as possible, and the series would be worth more if it has not aired yet on BBC Prime.
Corrections and updates are welcome at thisweekindoctorwho-

Season 16, Episodes 5 through 8. Doctor: Tom Baker. The Key To Time quest continues, as the Doctor and Romana have problems finding the second segment - they have arrived at the right time, in the right place, but on the wrong planet. Sunday 7:05-9AM GMT City of Death movie
Season 17, Episodes 5 through 8. Doctor: Tom Baker. The Doctor and Romana find that Paris is the home of time experiments that could bring about the extinction of humanity. Wouldn't be good for the art treasures of France, either. Particularly the Mona Lisa.
